Summary

A claustrophobic horror adventure set in the remote unknown forests of Galway, where mysterious creatures keep humans as pets for observation, from debut Irish author A。M。 Shine。

You can't see them。 But they can see you。 This forest isn't charted on any map。 Every car breaks down at its treeline。 Mina's is no different。 Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker。 As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams。

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground。 These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time。

Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers。 Who are the Watchers and why are these creatures keeping them imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

I love this book。 It's a slow paced read but very intriguing。 It was not terrifying per se, but I couldn't stop thinking about the end the night I finished it。 I felt jumpy after any noise I would hear and I had nightmares about the watchers。 I really wanted all the characters to survive。 I love this book。 It's a slow paced read but very intriguing。 It was not terrifying per se, but I couldn't stop thinking about the end the night I finished it。 I felt jumpy after any noise I would hear and I had nightmares about the watchers。 I really wanted all the characters to survive。 。。。more

I loved this bookGenuinely creepy and brooding。 Original idea。 This one stayed with me throughout the day and will for a long time。 I hope to read more from this author。 It would make an excellent film Had a tone which seems of modern times although this is hard to explain。

Not my usual sub-genre in horror but it was good。 There was a feeling of unease and uncertainty which made me want to keep reading。 Although the book seemed to be dragged out, with so much descriptive writing, that just seemed unnecessary at times。

Phenomenal read! Easily one of the best books I've read。 It was totally original, like nothing else I've ever read。 The characters felt so real and authentic。 There were moments I was gasping for breath while reading。 And the ending blew me away! 5/5 watcher skulls 💀 Phenomenal read! i really really really didn't like this one。 the first 50% could've been cut in half, in my opinion, without losing anything useful for the story。 it was meandering for no reason - it felt like being spoon-fed the things you HAVE TO KNOW because the author didn't trust the reader to pick it up for themselves。 it was overwritten to the point where it became a game of 'how many sentences does this paragraph actually need?' by the end。 not my thing at all :( i really really really didn't like this one。 the first 50% could've been cut in half, in my opinion, without losing anything useful for the story。 it was meandering for no reason - it felt like being spoon-fed the things you HAVE TO KNOW because the author didn't trust the reader to pick it up for themselves。 it was overwritten to the point where it became a game of 'how many sentences does this paragraph actually need?' by the end。 not my thing at all :( 。。。more

When Mina’s car breaks down at the forest tree line she finds herself stranded and is forced into the woodlands - as dark draws near she finds a woman shouting for her to run towards the only sign of ‘life’ - a windowed bunker in the middle of the woods。 Mina and the strangers she find in this bunker have found safety from the creatures outside, but they are being watched and they are trapped in the forest that exist on no map。 Who are the watchers? What do they want? Is this their forever home now?The Watchers was a uniquely suspenseful story as you learn about the life of our strangers and what brought them together in the bunker, the life of survival they are resigned to, and the creatures that surround, stalk and watch them。 There was just enough panic to keep you on the edge of your seat and enough twists that I wasn’t predicting every turn of the story on the page。 One of the more unique reads I’ve found and gives me pause to go into the woods。 [Seriously I would never go into the woods on my own anyway!!! Horror 101!]。 Definitely looking forward to reading more from this author。 。。。more

An enjoyable read all the way through。 Mina is travelling to deliver a parrot to someone she doesn't know, as a favor for her friend Peter。 She gets lost in the middle of nowhere with a map that isnt any help。 Her car cuts out right next to a dark, deserted forest and her phone dies。 Mina abandons her car and walks towards the forest as the road by which she came goes to nowhere for miles and miles。As dusk approaches Mina and her bird notice a shack, of sorts, and a woman beckoning them inside。 An enjoyable read all the way through。 Mina is travelling to deliver a parrot to someone she doesn't know, as a favor for her friend Peter。 She gets lost in the middle of nowhere with a map that isnt any help。 Her car cuts out right next to a dark, deserted forest and her phone dies。 Mina abandons her car and walks towards the forest as the road by which she came goes to nowhere for miles and miles。As dusk approaches Mina and her bird notice a shack, of sorts, and a woman beckoning them inside。 The woman calls to Mina to hurry! There Mina meets Madeline, Daniel and Ciera, all dishevelled and worn。 They live in this hut and are afraid of the night, because at night - the Watchers come。I felt a real attachment to the characters and their plight。 The ending is very satisfying and having finished I now miss being in this story。 。。。more

A。M。 Shine's The Watchers is a damn fine horror read。 I found myself pretty well pulled in from the get-go and I was thoroughly engaged throughout the whole book。 I loved the way this built upon Irish folklore to create something unique and truly horrifying in the best way。 I did find some of the prose to be almost a bit overly descriptive and too flowery from time to time, which broke some tension。 I did enjoy the story enough that it never ended being too much of a distraction, however。 A。M。 Shine's The Watchers is a damn fine horror read。 I found myself pretty well pulled in from the get-go and I was thoroughly engaged throughout the whole book。 I loved the way this built upon Irish folklore to create something unique and truly horrifying in the best way。 I did find some of the prose to be almost a bit overly descriptive and too flowery from time to time, which broke some tension。 I did enjoy the story enough that it never ended being too much of a distraction, however。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Yes, I guessed the twists before they came。 Yes, I had questions (like other reviewers) along the way。 But that didn't stop me from devoiring this book like a delicious snack。 It fueled my imagination, and I thought about it when I wasn't reading it, including when I woke up in the middle of the night。 An atmospheric (albeit slightly slow) creepy folk tale。 ☆☆☆☆4 stars I really enjoyed this book。 Yes, I guessed the twists before they came。 Yes, I had questions (like other reviewers) along the way。 But that didn't stop me from devoiring this book like a delicious snack。 It fueled my imagination, and I thought about it when I wasn't reading it, including when I woke up in the middle of the night。 An atmospheric (albeit slightly slow) creepy folk tale。 ☆☆☆☆4 stars 。。。more

Libro inquietante, spaventoso e a tratti claustrofobico ambientato in una casetta sperduta in una foresta irlandese。 Basato sul folklore irlandese è uno di quei libri da leggere con la luce accesa。Bella la premessa del libro: stay in the light。

I really enjoyed this。 An easy read, the pace was excellent and tension really built throughout。 Would have loved a prequel or for this to be the second in the series, the Dr really intrigued me but this was left unexplored。 Really pleased the yellow one made it。 I wouldn’t hesitate to pick something else up from the same author。

New author, great book。A very original horror story。 Great plot, and original ideas, with strong characters, and ties to folklore。。 Nice twist to the ending。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'd love to see this book as a film。 The plot was great, and the predictability of one of the main plot twists didn't spoil the intrigue。 I also loved the setting, although the prose was as saturated in similes as a lost sock, abandoned in a rain storm as torrential as a power shower, and washed out to the bottom of an ocean, as deep as the Mariana trench。 I was also mildly bothered by the plausibility of some of it (ridiculous given that it's a supernatural horror story), but I found it hard to I'd love to see this book as a film。 The plot was great, and the predictability of one of the main plot twists didn't spoil the intrigue。 I also loved the setting, although the prose was as saturated in similes as a lost sock, abandoned in a rain storm as torrential as a power shower, and washed out to the bottom of an ocean, as deep as the Mariana trench。 I was also mildly bothered by the plausibility of some of it (ridiculous given that it's a supernatural horror story), but I found it hard to believe they'd be able to forage/hunt enough to survive, albeit starving, for months。 And also I don't think the toilet situation wasn't covered to my satisfaction。 Did they have a bucket? Unexpectedly really enjoyed this one。 Set in deepest, darkest Ireland: I wasn’t expecting to be as scared as I was by this。 Something far more sinister than cute little leprechauns lurks in the woodlands of Connemara…and once you enter the woods there’s no way out because you are constantly being watched…。and they aren’t friendly。 Despite being a fairly short book, this is packed with detail, intriguing characters & a fast-paced plot。 You are kept looking over your shoulder right up until the ve Unexpectedly really enjoyed this one。 Set in deepest, darkest Ireland: I wasn’t expecting to be as scared as I was by this。 Something far more sinister than cute little leprechauns lurks in the woodlands of Connemara…and once you enter the woods there’s no way out because you are constantly being watched…。and they aren’t friendly。 Despite being a fairly short book, this is packed with detail, intriguing characters & a fast-paced plot。 You are kept looking over your shoulder right up until the very last page。 A terrifying & original story。 。。。more

Some thing DifferentI love this story。 Very original with strong characters and plenty of thrills and chills。 This is a monster tale but not about traditional monsters。 Instead the monsters are everywhere and not terribly obvious。 I do not want to give away the story plot so instead I suggest reading the story synopsis and then diving right in。 Enjoy

You can't see them。 But they can see you。The Watchers is set in an un-charted forest in Ireland; where cars break down at the tree line; where sunlight hardly breaks through the dense trees; where no fauna dare live。The choice of setting for any story is always important, but especially within the horror genre。 Whilst forests are wonderful, natural spaces; there is also something unnerving about them。 The vast space; how easy it is to become lost; what actually lurks in those cluster of trees。 T You can't see them。 But they can see you。The Watchers is set in an un-charted forest in Ireland; where cars break down at the tree line; where sunlight hardly breaks through the dense trees; where no fauna dare live。The choice of setting for any story is always important, but especially within the horror genre。 Whilst forests are wonderful, natural spaces; there is also something unnerving about them。 The vast space; how easy it is to become lost; what actually lurks in those cluster of trees。 The author has used that atmospheric setting to his advantage。The four main characters within the story are Mina, Madeline, Daniel & Ciara。The author hasn't gone with the stereotypical horror characters that you find in many books of the genre。 They aren't the high school friends on a weekend camping, instead he has given us four perfect strangers。 They haven't just happened upon the bunker at the same time either; each one arrived there in different years and months。Whilst they are strangers to one another, they quickly have to learn to trust in each other, and like with any 'pack', an hierarchy is formed。It's not often that I can say I liked all the characters within a book, but I actually did in this one; even Madeline, who at first just came across as cold hearted & nasty, but grew on me once it was obvious she was actually protecting the others。 The watchers, those unseen, and unknown creatures who lurk in their pits during the day, but come above ground at night to observe their captive 'pets。' As we aren't initially given a description of 'the watchers,' it makes ones imagination run wild; who are these screaming creatures; are they some feral inbred clan; are they a pack of hungry animals。 The author uses that primal fear of the unknown, and unseen, to build up the goosebump inducing dread。 This gothic horror debut is the perfect blend of atmospheric setting, suspense, and things that scream in the night, without all the gore。 Remember, stay in the light。 。。。more

Are you in the mood to read a rant? Because that's what you're getting。I was genuinely excited for this book! The mystery isn't just this unanswered question that noone seems to want to acknowledge, it now has meaning and clues and the plot begins to more forward。 We already know every detail of each characters back story by this point so we can get on with watching their characters grow while handling their nightmare。 And it's truly a nightmare, the idea makes me feel a little sick and while my head is telling me that I'd do things differently and I'd do better。。。 I wouldn't。 Not really。 I'd suffer just as the characters did because they had no choice and it really is a terrifying concept。Then it starts towards an ending and it's so incredibly predictable。 The twist isn't really a twist, just something I'd been waiting to be revealed for 200 pages。 But, I still enjoyed reading it。 Again, I like the writing and I want the characters to succeed because they've absolutely suffered enough。But that ending! It just stops。 Something I didn't see coming finally happens and it's like the author walked away for a break and just never came back。 I was very annoyed。Honestly, over all I enjoyed it! Doesn't sound like it does it but I did! I love the concept which I find the idea of genuinely scary, and I will be reading the second one when it's released。 I don't think I'd recommend it though, there's too much boring and I'm not sure it's really worth the effort, but personally, I enjoyed it。 I will be thinking of that forest and those creatures for a while to come。 。。。more
